If you're looking for a way to give back to the community and you're an animal lover, the Austin Animal Center needs your help.
Chantelle Wallace is almost as happy as the two pups she's taking for a morning walk.
"They can get really excited when they get out of their kennels," said Wallace.
For the past six years, Wallace has volunteered as a dog walker at the Austin Animal Center.
"I've done volunteer work all over the world and this is the most rewarding volunteer experience I've ever had."
Wallace says it's a win-win for her and the dogs because they get their exercise and she burns a few calories each time which has added up over the years.
"I've actually run three full marathons thanks to training with dogs from the shelter," she said, "So they can get you in shape."
But even with all of those miles covered by Wallace it's not enough. The Austin Animal Center is in desperate need for volunteers.
"We don't have enough staff to walk all of the pets so we definitely need volunteers," said Laureli Combs, with the Austin Animal Center.
Aside from walkers, AAC also needs volunteers for positions such as surgical techs, customer greeters, and administration duties,
"They're a great essential force here," said Combs.
While Wallace's real job keeps her on a busy schedule, there's no specific time schedule required as long as she volunteers 6 hours each month.
The Austin Animal Center also has a new way to contribute without donating any money, just your time. All you have to do is download the "Walk for a Dog" app on your smart phone. For every mile you walk with a dog, the app donates 5 dollars to the animal shelter of your choice.
"It's a win-win situation. The animals get exercise, you get exercise and the shelter gets a little cash," said Combs.
