Valley couple concerned over the impact of SB1062

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Suzanne O'Neal and Megan Eikenberry are looking for dresses for their commitment ceremony.

Planning a wedding and figuring out which businesses would work with them has been tough. Now the couple feels the situation is only made worse by the controversial SB1062, which would make it legal for businesses to refuse service to people based on religious beliefs.

"The downside is I feel people will use it to an advantage and we will get more of this backlash," said Suzanne O'Neal.

Supporters of the bill say it's not targeted to the LGBTQ community. Lawmakers voting for the bill say it just strengthens exiting laws protecting religious freedom.

"The supporters are like, 'Oh well, it's not about that, but people see hidden messages.  We are not dumb.  We can see what true meaning, so I think that's a little hurtful," said O'Neal.

The couple just came back from a same sex wedding in California. They heard news of the bill now on Gov. Jan Brewer's desk on the car ride home.

"It was actually heartbreaking feeling like here we were in the state right next door  where we could be incredibly happy and we come back here and it starts over," said Megan Eikenberry.

The couple says they will still have their wedding in Arizona, after all it's their home state, whether they are welcomed in all businesses or not.

"We don't want to spend our money where it's not wanted anyway, but it's sad that it has to be a law. That's a stab in the heart," said the couple.
