AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Witnesses have testified they heard a man charged in the 2012 slaying of a Central Texas police officer admit shooting the victim.
Testimony continues Wednesday in the Austin capital murder trial of Brandon Daniel.
A manager of an Austin Wal-Mart store testified Tuesday that Daniel giggled and said "I killed a cop" after Austin police Officer Jaime Padron (HYE'-may pah-DROHN') was shot.
Lincoln LeMere was among the witnesses in the opening day of the 26-year-old former software engineer's trial. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
Officer Albert Arevalo testified that Daniel stared blankly and spoke in a slurred, lethargic tone. He said Daniel also told him, "I killed a cop."
Daniel's attorney says his client had taken the anti-anxiety drug Xanax earlier that night.
