CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Authorities have charged three people who were shot by police officer late Tuesday morning after a chase down the Eisenhower and Dan Ryan expressways.

Donald Harris, 24; Barry Hayes, 20; and a 16-year-old boy were all charged in connection with the chase, which began after 11th District officers witnessed a shootout at Hamlin and Ferdinand, according to Chicago Police.

The gunman fired several shots at the officers, then got into a waiting vehicle with two others inside, according to a preliminary statement from police. Police began to chase the vehicle, which raced first down the Eisenhower and then the Ryan.

Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said as an unmarked police car pulled even with the suspects' vehicle on the Dan Ryan near 28th, a passenger in the rear seat shot at the police car.

The suspects' car exited the expressway onto Wentworth and struck several other vehicles before coming to a stop near 35th and Wentworth, police said.

When police approached the vehicle, the passenger in the rear seat again pointed a gun at officers, who fired at the three suspects, Camden said.

The officers fired "in fear of their lives," striking three people in the vehicle, the police statement said.

Harris, of the 6600 block of South Damen Avenue, is charged with criminal trespass to vehicles, and aggravated possession of a stolen vehicle, police said.

Hayes, of the 400 block of West 58th Street, is charged with aggravated assault of a police officer with a firearm, possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated fleeing causing bodily injury, and having a firearm without a valid FOID card, police said.

The 16-year-old is charged with attempted murder, criminal trespass to vehicles, two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, and unlawful use of a weapon, police said.

The teen was also wanted on an outstanding warrant, police said. His name was not released because of his age.

All three are scheduled to appear for a bond hearing Thursday, but court information was not immediately available.

Police said a weapon was recovered from the vehicle.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating, along with Area North detectives.
