The body found in Lady Bird Lake Monday morning is that of a missing St. Edwards University student. Investigators made that announcement late Monday afternoon ending a long and painful search by the student's family.
The body was spotted Monday morning by a woman jogging across the South 1st Street Bridge. It was a terrible sight that drew onlookers to the edge of Lady Bird Lake.
Among those who found it difficult to turn away was Chris Nicholson. He couldn't help but think- that the body authorities slowly pulled to the shoreline - was that of a young man whose face he has seen before.
"My girlfriend, her and her family, was handing out posters with his pictures on it," said Nicholson.
The search for 20 year old Eleno Efren Valle began a little more than a week ago. According to a Missing Persons Alert it was believed he was off of his anti-depression medication when he was last seen. Security camera video showed Valle leaving his dorm the night of Feb 6th.He was wearing a dark brown jacket at the time. The man recovered from the lake, Monday, was also wearing dark clothing, but that wasn't enough to make an immediate identification.
"The body was in the water for about a week. Detectives are investigating this as a suicide," said APD Spokesperson Veneza Bremner.
Monday afternoon, an autopsy by the Travis County Medical Examiner resolved the question of identification. While the search for Valle's family has come to an end -- questions remain as to why this young man may have taken his life.
