Icy weather is blamed for causing numerous accidents in north Austin and in Round Rock.
Police were forced to shut down some overpasses and flyovers. The worst reports of ice came in from Highway 183 and the toll road.
A 20 car pileup occurred on the entrance ramp to Toll 45, off of I-35 south. As Round Rock Police worked to remove the 20 wrecked vehicles the scene, they closed all ramps to SH 45.
Earlier this dark, empty flyover off of southbound I-35 to the 45 toll was full of cars--stuck because of the ice. Below, Round Rock police reporting a one vehicle crash on I-35.
Around 7 p.m. 20 cars lined the flyover. The drivers were stuck for at least 30 minutes while tow trucks made their way onto the flyover to help get the vehicles out.
Ever since, Round Rock has shut down the flyover. We saw TxDOT out here treating the roadway to keep this from happening again. The traffic on the toll way itself seems to be moving along just fine.
The city of Pflugerville tweeted earlier tonight ice developing on bridges and overpasses on parts of toll 45 and the 130 toll. Sections were closed. Roads have been sanded and re-opened.
Austin police tweeted spin outs on a flyover at 183A and the 45 toll because of ice. That situation too has been remedied.
TxDOT has crews on call all night long and will be treating problems as they arise. They expect the situation to worsen overnight. Keep space between you and the other cars and take it slow.
