PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

A widespread skin infection outbreak has emerged among high school wrestlers throughout Arizona. The number of wrestlers infected is so significant that the state's 16 sectional tournaments this weekend have all been canceled.

If you think about the contact wrestlers have with each other and the mats you can see why this is such a big problem. A total of 16 different wrestling tournaments were postponed this weekend because of the skin infection outbreak.

The Arizona inter-scholastic association isn't saying how many students are infected only saying it was a significant enough number to postpone those tournaments.

So what is infecting these students? It's not MRSA which you've probably heard of, it's not genital herpes, it's a disease called impetigo.

Impetigo is a highly contagious skin infection that mainly affects children. Symptoms include blisters or sores on the body.

The question for many athletes and their families is when will they be allowed to wrestle again, the head of the AIA says at this point they don't know. "We just ask the public to be patient as we look into this matter more and dig into how extensive the skin infection issue and understand this is about the health and safety of the kids, and in no way will we compromise that" said Chuck Schmidt with the AIA.

AIA officials will be consulting with county and state health officials before giving the green light for those postponed wrestling tournaments to resume.
