SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -

It may be winter for most of the country, but spring is in the air in the valley.

Spring Training officially begins Thursday morning when the D-Backs pitchers and catchers report for workouts.

Baseball fans have been waiting all winter for this day and in just a few hours, baseball will be back in the valley.

"The best part is everybody's equal. Everybody's getting ready to start the regular season, got a long eight weeks ahead of us, but, you know, all that hard work you do in the off season--you're just ready to get out there between the lines," said JJ Putz, D-Backs relief pitcher.

The D-Backs are hoping to rebound after a disappointing year.

They finished 81-81, which was good enough for second in the National League West, but not good enough to make the playoffs.

Although pitchers and catchers report at 11 a.m., their first workout will be on Friday.

Position players will join them next week when they report on Tuesday.

The first full squad workout will be on February 12; those workouts are open to the public.

65 players will be in camp, including 27 non-roster invitees.

The Cactus League season will start with an exhibition game against the L. A. Dodgers at Salt River Fields on February 26.

The D-Backs and Dodgers will also open the regular season with a series in Sydney, Australia on March 22 and 23.
