PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Phoenix Police responded to a report of shots fired Cesar Chavez High School near 35th Avenue & Baseline Friday evening.

Officers responded to the school after 8 p.m. after off duty officers heard the shots rang out during the basketball game underway against Fairfax High School.

Witnesses nearby at the softball field tell FOX10 that they heard several shots and people ran from the area. The shots appeared to be fired outside of the gym.

Police are investigating gang involvement as there was a report of gang statements were made before the first shot rang out.
