Valley man nearly dies from the flu virus

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Most of us think the flu is having a fever, body aches and the chills but this year the flu has been life threatening for healthy young people in their 20's and 30's.

Jamie Ison is 27 years-old, in great shape, he's a personal trainer, and he almost died from the flu.

"It was really scary he had a cough for a about a week he got a fever all of the a sudden he was in the emergency room" said Krissy Ison, Jamie's wife.

He ended up in the intensive care unit hooked up to a breathing machine called the ECMO fighting for his life.

"This unit here is where oxygen 100 oxygen mixed with the patients blood and returned to patients body" said Dr. Bob Raschke with Banner Samaritan Hospital.

Dr. Raschke at Banner Samaritan Hospital believes the problem is they didn't get a flu shot. "A lot of people are afraid of the vaccine what studies show its a benefit with low risk" said Dr. Raschke.

Jamie did not get a flu shot but he will from now on. Doctors say it's not too late to get the flu shot this year because Arizona's flu cases peak late in the season.
