A picture of State Senator Wendy Davis holding a shotgun continued to cause a buzz Friday on social media. FOX 7 got the real story behind the picture that some have called a Dukakis moment.
The Texas Democratic Party posted the picture of Davis on their twitter account. The candidate for Governor is seen standing with a shotgun that once belonged to former Governor Ann Richards. Davis was at a Party fundraiser in Austin Tuesday night when the picture was taken. According to a spokesperson with the Texas Democratic Party, the shotgun was a gift from Richards' son. The moment was not a staged photo op, according to a spokesman with the Davis campaign.
Some conservatives on social media have compared the picture to one taken of former Presidential candidate Mike Dukakis. The Democrat Governor of Massachusetts was running against then Vice-President George H. W. Bush. A series of photographs were taken of Dukakis in a tank, wearing a military helmet, in an attempt to address criticism he had little knowledge of the military. After the image was published it was considered to be public relations and campaign disaster that contributed to his defeat.
