Victim Speaks Out After Purse Snatched, Boyfriend Shot

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A local man is recovering in the hospital after he jumped in to help in another violent purse snatching.

"I was thinking about death. I was shocked, I didn't know what to do," said the young woman who was the robbery victim.

She her boyfriend, Derrick Moye, shown in a Facebook photo, had just stepped out the front door of his house on West Lehigh Avenue when suddenly a man appeared, grabbed her purse and took off. Moye immediately gave chase.

"He just grabbed it and took my money out and dropped my bag," the robbery victim told FOX 29 News as she described how Moye tried to come to her rescue.

Police say Moye got to the corner of 27th and Lehigh when a second man appeared with a gun and shot Moye one time in the chest, then took off.

"He shot him. Jumped out of nowhere. Yes," she said.

The young woman, who asked not to be identified, called police. Thirty minutes later, patrol officers from 22nd District stopped two men matching the descriptions of the robbers. They are now being called suspects.

"People want to fight back. They don't want to see these thugs get away with things like this and they fight back," said police Lt. George McClay, as he praised the actions of Moye and the quick arrest by patrol officers.

"He came to my rescue. I'm real grateful for that," the young woman said.

This was the third violent purse snatching incident in recent weeks. A suspect in Southwest Philadelphia has been robbing women at knifepoint. Two men were caught on tape 10 days ago as they robbed a purse from a mother and daughter in Northern Liberties.

The gunmen fired one shot, killing 26-year-old Amber Long during that purse-snatching incident. Police are now looking for links to Thursday's shooting.

"On the surface, they look very similar," McClay said."Could we get lucky? I hope so. That was a terrible crime. I'm hoping we can correlate the crimes together, but we're nowhere close to that yet."

Police say women should not resist if they are approached in a robbery situation.

"Don't fight. Give up the money you do have, but you can understand why they want to fight back," McClay added.

Police say they did recover items from the homes of the suspects that could be linked to this crime and others. They have not yet charged the suspects and would not identify them until they do.
