Ex-Bears file lawsuit over ‘Super Bowl Shuffle' proceeds

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

‘‘We're not here to cause no trouble. We're just here to do the Super Bowl Shuffle. Uh huh.''

Un't uh.

Nearly 30 years after they rapped the Super Bowl Shuffle, six players who participated in the Grammy-nominated video that punctuated the Bears' 1985 Super Bowl season have filed a lawsuit to ensure it is used for the ‘‘charitable purposes'' they say it was intended for, the Sun-Times is reporting.

Hall of Famer Richard Dent along with Jim McMahon, Otis Wilson, Willie Gault, Mike Richardson and Steve Fuller are the plaintiffs in the suit, filed Friday in Cook County Circuit Court.

‘‘The lawsuit provides that an important and stated objective of the Super Bowl Shuffle when it was produced in 1985, was to give back to Chicago's neediest families,'' said Walid Tamari, attorney representing the players.

‘‘Among other things, the plaintiffs seek that a constructive trust be established for charitable purposes that they select in order to continue the Super Bowl Shuffle's charitable objective,'' he said.

Indeed, Walter Payton rapped in the song, ‘‘We're not doing this because we're greedy. The Bears are doing it to feed the needy.'' Reportedly, more than $300,000 was donated to Chicago-area shelters after the video was released.

The Super Bowl Shuffle was released in September 1985 as the Bears were picking up steam toward a dominant season that culminated with a 46-10 rout of the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XX.

The video sold more than 500,000 copies and reached No. 41 on the Billboard ‘‘Hot 100'' pop chart in February 1986. The song was nominated for a Grammy in the ‘‘Best Rhythm & Blues Vocal Performance'' category in 1987, but lost out to Prince's ‘‘Kiss.''
