DETROIT (WJBK) -- A nine-year-old cancer patient is stepping into a very big role.

Detroit police on Friday named Jayvon Felton 'Detroit Police Chief for the Day,' according to Sgt. Michael Woody.

Woody says Felton was recently diagnosed with childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia and is a big fan of the Detroit Police Department.

As "Chief for the Day," Chief Felton was dropped off at headquarters by helicopter where he took the oath of office and held a news conference. That was just the beginning of a day he'll never forget.

FOX 2's Amy Lange followed Jayvon, documenting his trip throughout the day. Follow her on Twitter @langeamyFOX2 to see photos from the day.

Jayvon even met with emergency manager Kevyn Orr and deputy mayor Ike McKinnon.
