IRS: Best to file your taxes early

Posted: Updated:

Today is the last day of January, which means today is the first day that taxpayers can file their taxes. The first day to file is later this year than last due to the government shutdown in October, which pushed things forward on the Calendar.

For tax filers expecting refunds, the Internal Revenue Service suggests filling early. They say this will cut down on wait times for returns by as many as ten days in some cases. The IRS also says that filing early could cut down on identity theft.

It is suggested that those not waiting for a return file early as well.

Here are a few tips from the IRS on filing your tax returns:

  • Do not delay - rushing to meet the deadline, you may overlook possible tax savings and are more likely to make an error.
  • Go to www.irs.gov for tax news and information.
  • Use free file on the IRS website - it is available to those making $57,000 a year or less.
  • File on time.

Taxpayers still have until April 15th to file their taxes.
