NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice, a Democrat, will run for U.S. Congress, according to Newsday.

She will seek to replace longtime Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, who has been on medical leave from Congress and is retiring at the end of her term.

First elected as D.A. in 2005, Rice, 58, just began her third term in the job. In 2010, she ran for state attorney general but narrowly lost the primary to Eric Schneiderman, who went on to win the general election.

McCarthy ran for Congress on a gun control platform in the 1990s after her husband was killed and her son severely wounded in the LIRR massacre. She told Newsday that she is confident that Rice, if elected, will carry on the fight to reduce gun violence.

Several other Democrats and Republicans have indicated an interest in running for the seat.
