Speedy American marathon runners will be heading to Southern California in just more than a year from now to compete for a spot on the 2016 U.S. Olympic marathon team.

The marathon trials for men and women will be held in Los Angeles on February 13, 2016. The top three men and top three women will represent the flag at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro later that year.

"The U.S. Olympic Committee is pleased to be returning to Los Angeles with this amazing event," Scott Blackmun, the CEO of the committee, said in a statement. "As the host of the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games, Los Angeles has a tremendous Olympic legacy and L.A.'s status as a global center of sport and culture make it an exceptional host for the Olympic Trials."

Elite American runner Shalane Flanagan, winner of the 2012 U.S. Marathon Trials and 10th place finisher at the London Olympic Marathon, Tweeted her excitement about the selection of Los Angeles: "So proud of @usatf! Olympic marathon trails [sic] are going to be amazing, Feb 13th in LA! They listened to the athletes concerns and nailed it!"

The marathon trials races have been on a tour of the United States every four years. Houston played host to both the men's and women's races in January 2012. To decide the 2008 Olympic marathon team, New York hosted the men's trials in November 2007, while Boston was home to the women's trials in April 2008.
