The Austin Police Department has released the name and mugshot of the suspect in last weekend's shooting involving a police officer.
According to authorities, Fernando Estrada, 22, twice attempted to run over an officer, who was working another traffic situation nearby, after hitting another vehicle in a Shell station parking lot and trying to leave the scene.
APD Chief Art Acevedo said someone flagged the officer down and said that Estrada had hit their car. Estrada, driving a black truck, was allegedly attempting to get away when the officer ordered him to stop. According to police, Estrada then drove his truck toward the officer. The officer was able to get out of the way, and once again told Estrada to stop.
Estrada again accelerated in the direction of the police officer. The officer immediately moved out of the way while simultaneously firing several rounds at the truck, striking it multiple times, according to APD.
According to police, Estrada continued driving the truck down Rundberg, hitting another vehicle along the way. When he got to a traffic jam at Rundberg and Lamar, Estrada allegedly pulled into the H.E.B. parking lot and crashed into a sign before the officer arrested him.
Estrada was not injured in the shooting or the crash, according to Chief Acevedo.
He is faces four counts of Failure to Stop at the Scene of an Accident, Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and Aggravated Assault of a Peace Officer.
