PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Friends gathered Sunday at the scene of a deadly hit and run in North Phoenix where a 20-year old man was hit and killed. His girlfriend in custody for leaving the scene of a fatal crash.

Police say the girlfriend admitted to driving the car at the time of the crash but she told investigators she thought she hit a pole and just kept going.

Phoenix Police say the victim was walking in a bike lane when the car left the road, hitting and killing him. The suspect, telling police it was not intentional. On Sunday dozens of friends, of both the victim and suspect, came to pay their respects at the crash site.

Friends of Jake Rice, dropping flowers at the site where the  20 year old was found dead after a hit and run Saturday morning.

"I was just devastated shocked and sick to my stomach" said Rice's friend Emmalee Auralilo.

Rice's girlfriend, 20 year-old Brittney Nolan was booked Saturday night for leaving the scene of a fatal traffic collision. According to police, Nolan said she and Rice got into an argument and he walked away from the car near 27th drive and Carefree Highway. She allegedly told police she was driving around looking for him then went off the road when she looked at her cell phone and continued on thinking she hit a pole when in fact police say she hit and killed her boyfriend.

Investigators say her car, which was severely damaged, was found in her apartment complex nearby hours later, they believe the crash happened between 2am and 7:30am.

Detectives say a jogger found Rice's body around 830am, John Lunney was riding with a bicycle club in the area Saturday morning.

"One of the riders that came to me at nine came up and said he saw two people standing out here over who he thought might be a drunk or somebody passed out... by the time we left the bicycle ride shortly after nine police were here and just putting up the crime scene tape" said Lunney.

Authorities say when Nolan was contacted several hours after the crash, there were no signs of impairment however investigators say she admitted to drinking during a party Friday night. Police say more charges could be filed as they continue the investigation into rice's death.

"He is literally hilarious so sweet like he would go out of his way for all of his friends... he was just a great person and I'm so sad this happened to him" said Auralilo.
