A winter storm will be hitting the Central Texas area later this evening that could possibly create some havoc on the roadways for commuters.
The Texas Department of Transportation is making preparations by having crews check supplies, such as sand and de-icing materials, as well as ensuring that all of their equipment is ready to go. TxDOT has placed a heavy focus on preventing ice on Austin-area bridges and overpasses in areas like MoPAC and Hwy 183.
TxDOT has offered some tips for drivers in advance of the winter storm:
If it's bad, stay off the roads.
If you do drive, slow down and take extra precautions on bridges, shaded areas, overpasses and turns.
There have not been any weather-related delays in or out of Austin Bergstrom International Airport as of yet, but officials say that could change in the next 48 hours. Travelers should check the status of their flight before heading to the airport.
