CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Archdiocese of Chicago has announced plans to close six Catholic schools as it continues to consolidate operations. But St. Florian School is fighting the proposed closing.

Sarah Dejanovich, an alumnus and member of the Save St. Florian committee, joined FOX 32 News to talk about how the Hegewisch community has come together to save their school.

"I was in absolutely disbelief," Dejanovich said. "I graduated from the school. I have two sisters who graduated from the school and two sisters currently going to the school. I couldn't believe it. I was heartbroken."

But Dejanovich said "no" to letting an opportunity to help keep her school open pass her by. St. Florian has been open for 108 years and is a vital part of the neighborhood as the last Catholic school in Hegewisch. Dejanovich said the athletic program accommodates at least 700 kids, keeping them off the street.

The archdiocese said St. Florian must fill a $300,000 budget gap every year for the next three years in order to stay open. The community has come up with a sustainable plan. Now they need to come up with the money.

St. Florian has seven days to raise the funds. They are at $85,000 so far, as of Wednesday afternoon. The community has been a great help, thinking of unconventional ways to spread the word and raise the dollars, through church collections and the Angel Plan.

Dejanovich's committee set up a GoFundMe campaign in an effort to raise $50,000 in donations. Thanks to generous pledges so far, they have passed the $4,500. But they are still a long way from their goal.
