Driver charged over death during Texas flooding

Posted: Updated:

LOCKHART, Texas (AP) - A driver accused of ignoring barricades set up during Central Texas flooding has been indicted in the death of a passenger who was swept away.

A Caldwell County grand jury indicted 43-year-old Willie Brite Jr. of Lockhart on a charge of criminally negligent homicide.

Sheriff's Sgt. Frank Alvarez says Brite was not in custody Friday.

Investigators say Brite on Nov. 1 deliberately went around safety barricades along Brushy Creek and his vehicle ended up submerged. Brite escaped but 57-year-old Cynthia McKee was swept away. Her body was recovered Nov. 12 in the creek.

Officials say Brite was also indicted Wednesday on a driving while intoxicated charge in connection with a December incident.
