Austin Police are looking for a man wanted in connection to a home burglary in Southwest Austin.
Police say there is an active warrant for Gary Whiteis, 60, for burglary. Earlier this week an officer on patrol thought they saw him but the man ran into the woods off Convict Hill and escaped before the department's helicopter or K-9 arrived.
Senior Police Officer Jermaine Kilgore says DNA and other investigative techniques link Whiteis to an August burglary in the 6900 block of Robert Dixon Drive.
"He's wanted for that burglary but could possibly be connected to other burglaries. It is an ongoing investigation," said Kilgore.
Kilgore says in the burglary on Robert Dixon the suspect would force his way through fences and rear doors. Police say a burglary is a crime of opportunity.
"This is a crime of opportunity. Burglars want to be there to steal your things and get out," said Kilgore.
Roger Casanova is one of many neighbors in South Austin sharing this community alert on social media. Casanova says a series of burglaries were reported around the same time during the summer.
"We pass along any information we get from APD especially bolos like the one we have for Mr. Whiteis," said Casanova.
