Coyotes become more prevalent as mating season nears

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Cincinello family loves their playful puppy Dixie.

They also love their 10-year-old Maltese, Daisy.

Sadly, the day before Thanksgiving, Daisy was killed by a coyote.

"All I remember seeing is just the silhouette of the coyote in the darkness and Daisy in the coyote's mouth," said Carol Cincinello, Daisy's owner.

Daisy was not on a leash, but was in the front yard with Carol Cincinello just a few feet away.

"I thought just the mere human presence would threaten the coyote, but that didn't happen," Cincinello said.

Dan Thompson, an ecologist for the DuPage County Forest Preserve District, says coyotes who are nearing their mating season are adapting to living near people.

"They are going to start looking for food in other locations and it could be quite frequently in people's yards," Thompson said.

Mating season for coyotes will become more territorial.

"Now you have more defensive parents wanting to make sure that they have a safe environment for their future offspring. And so another canine in their territory could be an issue."

Experts suggest finding ways to keep the animals away.

You can try opening a garbage bag, it makes a loud noise as it inflates, or opening up your jacket to appear larger and intimidating.

"In many ways people are submissive towards the coyotes and that is causing these coyotes to become more and more bold and further problems are going to arise if we can't turn this trend around," Thompson said.

The Cincinello family is hoping their story will save other pets from becoming victim, "I would like for the coyotes and our pets to be able to live and inhabit together, but I don't that that's working."

Thompson said people need to learn to start dealing with coyotes because, unfortunately, they are not going away.
