Alinea chef tweets about reservations on handling crying babies

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The long-running debate about bringing children to restaurants has just been kicked-up a notch.

A lot of people might say the type of restaurant determines when it's okay to bring kids along.

So what about a type of restaurant such as Chicago's Alinea?

It's about as fancy a restaurant as one can find in Chicago. Year after year, it's ranked one of the world's best restaurants.

And of course, it's expensive.

Demand is so high to eat at Alinea you have to buy advanced non-refundable tickets.

Seats this past Saturday night were going for $275 a person, not including drinks, tax and tip.

Alinea is known for inventive food that's part sustenance, and part sculpture. There's no kids' menu there.

So that's why many people think it's wrong that a couple brought their baby Saturday night, who ended up crying during dinner.

The renowned chef at Alinea, Grant Achatz. tweeted about it wondering aloud if he should start a formal "no kids" policy.

He wrote: "table brings eight-month-old. It cries. Diners mad. Tell people 'no kids?' subject diners to crying? Do people take infants to plays? Concerts? I hate saying 'no,' but..."

There's been talk that the couple who brought the baby to Alinea may have had their babysitter cancel on them.

If that's what happened, you could see how it would be a dilemma, as you pay more than $500 for tickets that cannot be returned.

Tickets for Alinea can be resold to someone else, but the babysitter cancellation could have happened last minute.

Then again, maybe there was no babysitter cancellation, just a couple with a baby who likes fine food, fine drinks and crying.

The incident has sparked both discussion and humor.

A Twitter account was created by the name of "Alinea Baby."

IT says: "I'm a baby who likes fine food, fine drinks, and crying."

Achatz is now following "Alinea Baby."
