Cuomo prepares for re-election bid in diverse NY

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is playing to his right. And to his left.

In his recent State of the State address, the governor called for property tax freezes for homeowners, $20,000 bonuses for great teachers and access to medical marijuana for the sick.

It's part of a long-standing pattern with the governor that could help him as he seeks re-election. New York is a politically diverse state that includes not only New York City residents who just voted for a liberal mayor but also suburban swing voters and conservative upstate precincts.

During his three years in office, Cuomo has stressed business friendly policies with high-profile liberal causes such as gay marriage and gun control. This year's State of the State address offered that same kind of mix.
