Extreme cold plagues travel on Michigan roadways

One pileup after another on the area freeways, in addition to dead car batteries or starters, mean the tow trucks haven't been this busy in a while.

AAA Michigan says at least 2,200 motorists have been helped in about a 12-hour period. Spokeswoman Nancy Cain says the all-time high during one day was 9,900 on Jan. 20, 1994, during a similar deep freeze.

Sections of Interstate 94 in and around Detroit were closed Tuesday because of crashes, including one involving an ambulance. State transportation officials also report numerous crashes or lane closures on Interstates 75 and 696.

Emergency officials have been warning people to stay off roads, with record-low temperatures in some areas and wind chills that made it feel as though it were 30 to 40 degrees below zero.

Fox 2's Amy Lange talked to several local tow truck drivers who say they have barely had a break all day.

"Mostly no starts and jump starts is what I've been dealing with and people stuck. So, it's been a cold morning today," says Ken Gooley from Monaghan's Towing.
