The family of a man shot and killed by a former Austin police officer last year are calling for his indictment.
Larry Jackson's family members and supporters gathered outside the Travis County Attorney's office this afternoon for a rally. In July, police say Detective Charles Kleinert chased down Jackson after employees at a Benchmark Bank in Central Austin claimed Jackson was attempting to commit forgery. The two struggled, and Kleinert claims his gun accidentally went off, killing Jackson. An internal investigation was started, and then in October, Kleinert retired.
Jackson's family says they want justice.
"We need justice for my brother.", Jackson's sister said. "We need justice for my niece and nephews, because we couldn't even let my niece and nephews say goodbye to their brother because we had to have a closed casket because of what Kleinert did."
The criminal investigation continues and a grand jury will decide if Kleinert should be indicted.
