DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says the city is prepared for another big snowfall. Crews are working around the clock to catch up on trash pickup and clear residential streets.

Last week, private contractors helped clear 1800 miles of residential streets in Detroit and they're on standby to do it all over again. Mayor Duggan says the city has 40 of its own vehicles ready to go on main streets. If more than 6 inches fall in Detroit, a small army of reinforcements will be back out as well.

"If you're out there and you see the sanitation workers and the snow plow operators smile and wave," Duggan said. "These people are doing a phenomenal job for us."

He says mechanics are also working around the clock behind the scenes. Since Duggan was sworn in, crews have put down thousands of tons of salt and cleared 2500 miles of roads and it's not just snow piling up. Garbage is also accumulating. The new mayor admits pickup is about two days behind due to road conditions and the heavy snow.

"We started last night with every available garbage truck now operating 24-hours-a-day and our sanitation workers are going to be out there around the clock until we catch up," Duggan said.

Duggan was once a garbage truck driver himself back in college so he knows what crews are dealing with. He says don't be surprised if you hear trucks in your neighborhood at 3-4am. Private vendors will also be brought in to help with trash. Next week, the city will be on a holiday schedule for garbage pickup so residents should put trash out one day later than their regularly scheduled day.
