Southampton trustees sue over post-Sandy bulkheads

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) - The Southampton Town trustees say owners of multimillion-dollar beachfront homes were shouldn't have been allowed to install steel bulkheads and boulders after Superstorm Sandy.

Newsday reported Tuesday on the trustees' suit against the state and Southampton Village. The suit says the structures behind at least eight homes on tony Gin Lane erode public beaches and make surrounding dunes more vulnerable during storm surges.

The suit points to state coastal policies that call for responding to storm damage by moving homes farther from the water, not rebuilding bulkheads.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation declined to comment. Southampton Village Mayor Mark Epley called the suit "absolutely ridiculous." He says officials followed the village code when permitting the structures.

The trustees are tasked with protecting beaches for public benefit.
