AFD issues fireworks warning

Posted: Updated:

The Austin Fire Department is reminding everyone that the sale and use of fireworks is illegal inside the Austin City Limits.

If caught, a person could be fined up to $500.

If a person's fireworks cause bodily harm and or property damage, AFD could charge that person with assault or arson. Both charges are felonies.

If you live in the county, they are not illegal but fire departments are asking that you use common sense when setting them off. Always keep a bucket of water with you and dispose of what's left of the fireworks properly.

"There's hundreds of fires across the state that are caused by fireworks. Use of fireworks and the possession of fireworks in the city of Austin is illegal. So we discourage any use of fireworks in the city. What we'd like you to do is go to professional shows, go to the one on auditorium shores it's a spectacular show, it's free and it's safe," said Harry Evans, AFD Chief of Staff.

To report somebody using fireworks, call 311, not 911. The latter is for emergencies only.
