Now that Christmas is over, what do you do with all the leftover boxes and wrapping?
The easiest answer is to recycle. The City of Austin has committed itself to reducing the garbage at our landfills. They hope to keep 50 percent of trash out of the landfills by 2015.
The city's made it easier for you to recycle by picking up your recyclables at the curb. Plus, you don't have to sort it. They are encouraging everyone to throw wrapping paper and empty boxes in the recycling bin. That way those paper products will be reused instead of ending up in the landfill.
So what do you do with your real Christmas tree? City of Austin curbside customers can put their tree out at the curb. Just remember to take off all of the lights and decorations off first.
If you don't have curbside pick-up, starting next Saturday, you can drop off your tree at Zilker Park. The tree recycling runs next Saturday and Sunday and the following Saturday and Sunday.
All of the trees collected will be composted into dillo dirt, which you can pick up later next month. That's a first-come, first-served basis.
