Stamford ousts sausage co. to make way for highway

Posted: Updated:

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) - A Stamford sausage company is closing to make way for a highway.

The Advocate of Stamford reports that DeYulio Sausage Co. was set to close Monday after more than 100 years in business. Nearly two dozen employees will lose their jobs.

Manager Jennifer Oxer says a state marshal delivered the eviction notice on Friday. The third-generation family business must vacate its 2,700-square-foot factory by Monday morning.

It was one of six properties acquired by the city under eminent domain two years ago. The buildings were marked for demolition to make way for the second phase of the $65 million Urban Transitway project, a four-lane roadway.

Oxer said the company found another location, but wouldn't be able to move until March. She says the business cannot survive a three-month delay.
