A local playwright has found a way to mix the Beatles with the story of Jesus' birth and just in time for Christmas. The new Broadway-style show can be seen here in Austin and it's gaining some national attention.
A few years ago, Stacy Brewer was watching the movie "Across the Universe", a movie that tells a modern day love story with Beatles music.
"I thought it would be amazing if I could take that story and transform into the Christmas story, using the Beatles' music as well," said Brewer.
After a "long" and winding road", Brewer put his idea on paper earlier this year and "Let it be Christmas" was born.
The story, which is ultimately about Jesus' "birthday", centers around two teenagers, Mary and Joe, and three ‘wise' characters.
"Lady Madonna, whose also known as Maddie. Jude who is the walrus, and finally Allison Rigby, who is the estranged daughter of Eleanor Rigby."
Eventually the characters "come together" in a manger scene unlike any before.
"You see the meaning of it from a different angle. All of a sudden it means something totally different. You catch things you never caught before."
The show, which is sponsored by World Vision, a Christian organization that helps impoverished children "across the universe", is gaining recognition and there are talks of a national tour. However, right now Brewer is focused on his audience in Austin.
"You have their attention, you have their heart and then you hit them with a Christmas story in a unique way they've never heard before."
Show times are this Friday and Saturday at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Gateway Church on McNeil Road in north Austin. 7104 McNeil Dr. Austin, TX 78729.
