AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The chairman of a House committee that oversees the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association is calling for an investigation over revelations of racist emails and accusations that bigotry affected claims in minority areas.
Republican state Rep. John Smithee said Thursday he's "greatly concerned" by published reports showing racist emails within the state-supervised insurer. The House Insurance Committee chairman says he's begun considering what entity would be best-suited to pursue an inquiry.
Court records show that TWIA attorney Andrew McKinney acknowledged to a judge last week that a South Texas claims manager had "issues with people who aren't white."
McKinney said "that puts us on the bubble" of whether racism played a role in a claim filed by the predominantly Hispanic Brownsville school district.
The Austin American-Statesman first reported the emails.
