NFL ready to tackle any Super Bowl snow

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Should a blizzard barrel its way through New York on Super Bowl Sunday, the NFL is ready.

"A storm Thursday night, Friday morning when the majority people are arriving would be very inconvenient," said Al Kelly, President and CEO of the NY-NJ Super Bowl Host Committee.

Kelly says an army of crews are on standby including 820 snow plow trucks within a 30 mile radius of the open air MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The NFL said they would also have melting trucks on-call that can melt 600 tons of snow per hour.

The severe weather contingency plan is similar to two already implemented by the Bears when extreme weather swarmed over the city.

Bears Vice President of Business Administration John Bostrom recalls the rain, lightening and tornado warnings at a Ravens game.

"We had to relocate the people inside the stadium. We didn't want them getting into the lower concourses and then going outside the stadium because safety is paramount," said Bostrom.

And then snow at the Cowboys game.

"The league requires us to remove all snow from the seating area as well as the playing field," said Bostrom.

So who makes the big call if a snowstorm hits Super Bowl Sunday?

"The referee has a big play in this from a game stand point, he determines whether or not the game is suspended," said Bostrom.

"New York finds that its very quick to pull the trigger when there's problems with weather that subways get shut down and I think the NFL is rightfully nervous," said Joe Schwieterman, a Transportation Professor at DePaul University.

About a possible, albeit unlikely, scenario.
