Post Office to deliver on Sundays, early mornings before Christmas

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

If you're planning on going to the post office today, you are not alone. The U.S. Postal Service will deliver a combined 607 million pieces of mail on Monday.

The Chicago Postal Service plans to deliver packages on the two Sundays before Christmas to make sure packages arrive on time for the holiday. Early-morning package deliveries through the week will also take place.

The postal service announced the extra deliveries Friday, saying a surge in packages mailed this holiday season exceeded projections – it's up 12 percent.

Post office officials advise sending first-class mail by Friday to make sure it arrives before Christmas. The deadline for sending priority mail in time is Saturday, Dec. 21.

Residents are asked to clear snow and ice to help mail carriers get holiday cards and packages to you on time.
