Bike sharing is coming to Austin. Starting later this week, hundreds of bikes will be up for rent in and around downtown.
Austin B-Cycle will roll out the classic red bikes, starting Saturday, December 21. The bikes will be available at 11 rental stations on popular street corners, such as 11th Street and South Congress Avenue.
Austin B-Cycle plans to add 30 more stations in the downtown area before March in time for the annual South by Southwest festival.
Executive Director of Austin B-Cycle said bike sharing is just another link in local transportation to help residents get to where they're going.
"With traffic congestion and the hassle of having a car downtown growing, this allows you a quick and easy way to get from point A to point B."
A day pass will cost riders $8.00 while a yearly pass will cost $80.
To encourage residents to try bike sharing, Austin B-Cycle is running a special December 21-31, where day passes will cost $1 with a promotional code.
