Family of slain teen pleads for help finding killer

Austin Police think there's a chance the suspect in the 2011 murder of a 13-year-old boy may be back in the Austin area.

Homicide Sgt. Brian Miller says Roman Arroyo, 19, is wanted for the stabbing death of Luis Flores. It happened around 8 p.m. on November 29th, 2011 in the 4800 block of Cypress Bend in South East Austin. Arroyo may have headed to Mexico following the murder. He has family in the Austin area and Miller says for the most part they are not cooperating.

"We just feel they aren't giving us all the information we need to find him," said Miller.

Something started a verbal altercation between the two and police say Arroyo stabbed Flores, and then took off.

"Detectives are asking for anyone in Austin community who might know his whereabouts whether it be here or possibly in Mexico to come forward with that information," said Miller.

Luis Flores' mother, Maria, says she just wants justice for her son. Luis came home from school late the night he was killed with good news. He had just been nominated captain of his basketball team at Ojeda Middle School in Del Valle. She says her son is not a troublemaker or a fighter.

"For me it is very hard to be right here but I know I need to do this," said Flores.

She made the trip back to the street where her son died to speak with the media. She hopes sharing memories of her son and showing Arroyo's picture will lead to new information about the case for police.

"This pain I don't wish it on anyone or any mother," Flores emotionally said. She hopes someone will come forward with any information that could lead to justice for her son.
