Family, friends attend candlelight vigil for teen found in dumpster

MESA, Ariz. -

Over a hundred people showed up to remember a 14-year-old girl who was found dead inside a dumpster in Mesa.  They're grieving and asking for answers -- how did she die and who did this to her?

It was an emotional night as many of Claudia Lucero's classmates were at a vigil, along with her family, who were just seeing the site where the girl's body was found for the first time.

"It hurts, you know, because it's my sister and everyone's here to support which makes me happy," said Claudia's brother, Ricky Lucero.

The vigil was held at the Sun Garden apartments at 860 E. Brown.  People placed candles outside the dumpster where the 14-year-old's body was found just after midnight Friday.

Investigators say Lucero was last seen the day before at her Mesa home around 6:30 a.m. Thursday.

For many, this was the first time seeing the place where her body was found.

"It's really difficult because she's not going to be here no more.. it's hard to believe someone would get her body and just throw it in the trash," said Darcy Ramirez.

While close friends found out about her death over the weekend, many classmates were told about it at school Monday.

"I found out today at school.. she used to sit right next to me in one of my classes.  Counselors came in, told us she had passed.. I was in shock, couldn't really believe it," said Jose Fuentes.  "Honestly, I just got this feeling in my stomach, like it hurts."

Lucero was a student at Mesa's Westwood High School.  Classmates say she was popular and friendly.

"She was always smiling, she was always laughing, always caring for other people," said Fuentes.

Many are finding comfort in being surrounded by friends and family.

"Makes me feel sort of comfort because there are lots of supporters here.. helps me know lots of family, friends people.. loved and cared for her, even if they didn't know her that well," said Fuentes.

There's no word on how or why Lucero was killed and police say no arrests have been made.

If you have any information about this case, you're asked to call Mesa Police Department at 480-644-2211 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
