A landfill may soon be developed just north of Lockhart in caldwell county, and some nearby residents are against it.
The group called the Environmental Protection in the Interest of Caldwell County voiced its concerns to commissioners Monday.
The group's goal was to get an ordinance passed that would stop the landfill from being developed at the location off State Highway 130. Members say they are worried about the environmental risks and the economic impact.
They are also concerned the landfill will be too large.
"They state the landfill is about 250 acres," Environmental Protection in the Interest of Caldwell County chairperson James Abshier said. "The total property is almost 1300 acres, and, of course, our concern is that they will re-permit the landfill and expand it as time goes on. Also, they say it's gonna be 175 feet tall. That can be as tall as a 17-story building."
According to Abshier, the company behind the proposed landfill is based out of Georgia and is called Green Group holdings. They reportedly filed a permit for the area early last month.
