ATLANTA -

A Henry County baby finally got the miracle he'd been waiting on for months.

Thousands of people have followed Silas Huffman's story. Back in August, the then-4-month-old boy was airlifted to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston with a swollen heart.

In October, Silas received a Berlin pump that took over for his failing heart until the donor heart was found.

On Saturday night, after waiting 100 days at the hospital, Silas' parents, Amanda and Chris Huffman, finally got the call they'd been waiting for.

"I said, ‘Hello' and I just heard [Amanda] sobbing,'" Chris Huffman said. "She said, ‘they found a heart for Silas.'"

Getting the heart to Atlanta proved to be difficult.   The jet carrying Silas' new heart was grounded in another city, unable to fly because of winter storms.

The Huffmans held on to Silas' beads of courage and sent up another prayer for the weather to clear.

Just when it looked like time might run out, the donor heart arrived running out of time, the donor heart arrived Sunday afternoon. Silas was rushed into surgery for the transplant.

Less than 24 hours later, Amanda Huffman snapped a photo of Silas smiling – another baby's heart beating in his chest.

"It means he has a new life.  He can have a life outside the hospital and live as normal a life as possible," Amanda Huffman said.

The first few days will be critical for Silas as his doctors watch for blood clots and other complications. He will have to take medication to keep his body from rejecting his new heart. But the Huffmans are hopeful -- and deeply grateful -- for his heart.
