With winter weather expected to blow through Central Texas this weekend Texas Department of Transportation crews are preparing to make sure the roads remain safe to drive.
Trucks have been loaded up and are ready to be dispatched to areas where ice forms on the roads especially bridges and overpasses.
Officials are urging drivers not to take to the roads in treacherous conditions if they can help it.
Drivers are also urged to take the following precautions.
- Slow down
- Maintain at three times the normal following distance on snow or ice
- Watch for trucks and equipment treating roadways and stay back 200 feet from them
- Use extra caution on ramps, bridges and overpasses – they freeze first
- If you start to slide, ease off the gas and brakes, steer into the direction of the skid until you have regained traction, then straighten your vehicle.
Road conditions will be updated on DriveTexas.org.
