A truck driver died Thursday afternoon after crashing his 18-wheeler into a thrift store in North Austin.
The accident took place just before 3:00 PM on the frontage road of I-35. The driver crashed into the back of a thrift store in the Capital Plaza shopping center in the 5300 block of I-35.
Paramedics administered CPR on the driver, but the 55-year-old driver was pronounced dead on the scene.
There were reports that the driver may have had some medical emergency that caused him to lose control. However, police are not confirming that at this time.
The cab of the truck was buried in the building in the crash. However, nobody inside the store was hurt.
Charlie Sneed heard a big bang outside and thought it was the sound of street signs being knocked over.
"Right away I turned around and called 911, and we have friends who work over there," Sneed recalled. "So I ran back around the building here to see if anybody was hurt and luckily nobody was over there and that surprises me because that store is usually full!"
Police have not released the man's name yet. They have not said whether the truck was driving on the access road or the highway.
