Shopper's High: Finding good bargains releases feel-good chemical

Posted: Updated:

Holiday specials bring you in the doors, but the reason you keep shopping is because of a chemical in your brain.

The instant satisfaction makes us want to do it again and again to be happy.

Our culture treats holiday shoppers running home with their treasures as just another wholesome sign of the season.

But, some sale seekers dart from store to store fueled not by holiday cheer, but instead the rush of a chemical coursing through their veins.

Psychologist Dr. Jeff Gardeer finds nothing wrong with dopamine or shopping or dopamine from shopping.

But when shopping's the only thing providing that chemical fix, then the bag-toting holiday hero starts to look like an addict.

For those who shop for the shopping highs, missing a sale, overpaying or going too long without a bargain can lead to shopping lows.

No matter how long your shopping lows or highs may last, don't forget to find other things that make you happy this holiday season..

Or, make sure you never stray too far from an Internet connection.
