Deadly Crash, Flooding Snarl I-76 Traffic

Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A deadly crash and highway flooding have had commuters at a standstill on Interstate 76 this morning in Philadelphia.

Some people have been stuck on the roadway for hours due to the problems on the Schuylkill Expressway.

All lanes were closed for some time at Montgomery Drive due to flooding, although some vehicles were able to get through some pretty deep waters in the left lane eastbound.

Additionally, there was a fatal crash reported earlier this morning on the westbound side between Montgomery Drive and U.S. Route 1.

FOX 29's Karen Hepp was out near the scene of the crash. She reported that one person was killed and at least six others were injured when a tractor-trailer struck the rear end of a minivan. According to police, the accident at around 4:26 a.m. this morning when a third car, a black sedan, hit a big pool of water and struck the concrete barrier on the westbound side. The minivan driving behind it slowed down in time, but the tractor trailer behind the minivan ended up hitting the rear of the minivan, killing a passenger.

Traffic on the westbound Schuylkill was so bad that it backed up into Center City.

CHECK: Latest Traffic Conditions

By 7 a.m., crews were using a snow plow to try and push water along on I-76, FOX 29's Kacie McDonnell reported.

It looked like we had a break through as the westbound lanes were cleared a short time later. But then water from the eastbound lanes started filling the westbound side, and traffic was at a standstill again.

Then, shortly after 8 a.m., a lane was getting by in each direction. Police are still investigating the crash.
