Becoming Dr. Ruth

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Before she was a pioneering sex therapist, Dr. Ruth Westheimer fled Nazi Germany and became a sniper.

“I was a super good sniper. I never killed anyone. But I was badly wounded,” said Dr. Ruth, 85.

Her life's story plays its self out in the "near Broadway" production, 'Becoming Dr. Ruth' starring actress Debra Jo Rupp of 'That 70's Show' fame.

“It really is about her journey which is unbelievable. She took advantage of everything that came her way,” said Rupp.

The woman who revolutionized the sexual dialog in the 1980s was destined for success not matter the rocky road getting there.

“I told the broadcasters that they have need to have a program on the air to educate – this was before AIDS-- about sexually transmitted diseases and contraception. Within one week (I was on) 15 minutes on NBC radio and 10 years on WNYW radio,” said Dr. Ruth.

'Becoming Dr. Ruth' is playing at the Westside Theater Upstairs, 407 W. 43rd St.
