The hundreds in the crowd at Saturday's 63rd annual Lansdale Mardi Gras Parade witnessed a special surprise when a local firefighter proposed to his longtime girlfriend.
Hilltown Township Volunteer Firefighter Ryan Mekel asked Angel Moran to marry him at the corner of Towamecin Avenue and Main St during the parade. She said yes!
Moran was originally scheduled to work at Brittany Point Estate where she cooks. Ryan asked her to take the day off and enjoy the parade with her family so he could secretly pop the question.
A four-legged member of their growing family was also in attendance at the festivities. The couple has a Dalmatian pup named Tug who joined Ryan in a horse drawn carriage at the parade. The pup and the gent made their way to Angel, who waited with family and friends not knowing she would soon be asked a life changing question.
Family members say it wasn't always a fairytale moment for these two. Mekel battled Hodgkin's disease in 2008 and had to undergo radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Mekel successfully completed treatments, and the idea of tying the knot with his high school sweetheart finally felt right.
Mekel and Moran have been together for eight years. They both graduated from North Penn High School in 2005.
