Passenger Removed From Atlanta Flight After Threats

Posted: Updated:

A disruptive passenger on a Spirit Airlines flight was removed by police after arriving in Atlanta on Friday.

Pilots said the passenger disrupted the entire flight from Fort Lauderdale to Atlanta by yelling and throwing things at other passengers.

On a video posted on YouTube by Charles Davis' wife, the unruly passenger is heard saying that he has a bomb and that if he is removed, the plane will blow up.

Davis said that the problems started as soon as Flight 404 got off the ground in Fort Lauderdale. He said that the man first got into an argument with a passenger next to him and then with a male steward.

"You could tell he was on something or maybe a psychiatric problem or whatever you could tell he was kind of detached from the situation once they got him," said Charles Davis.

Atlanta police officers removed him from the plane after it landed and put him in handcuffs. The man was taken to the psychiatric ward at Grady Memorial Hospital.

"Maybe he's suffering from some type of mental illness that we're not aware of," said Sgt. Greg Lyons of the Atlanta Police Department. "Our policy in situations like this we do take them to Grady Hospital."

Police said the passenger still could face criminal charges but that will be up to federal authorities as they have jurisdiction on commercial airlines.

Davis, who lives near Miami, is in Alabama for Thanksgiving with relatives. He's an Iraqi war veteran with battlefield experience and believes the man who cried out bomb on a plane should be held criminally responsible.

"This guy, I mean he upset a lot of people. He probably put the fear of God in a lot of people to ever fly," Davis said.

Spirit Airlines said that the plane was checked and no sign of a bomb was found
