The Wizard World Comic Con in Austin kicked off with a momentous occasion Friday afternoon as Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell dedicated the day to Denny Crane, TJ Hooker, Priceline Negotiator, Twilight Zone actor, Rescue 911 host, Captain Kirk -- whatever you know him by -- William Shatner!
A couple of hours before Shatner arrived we talked with some die hard Trekkies in costume.
Like Ivy Doomkitty... She made her "original series" uniform herself and she's helping judge a costume contest this weekend. I asked her if she's planning on meeting Captain Kirk.
"We'll see! I met him in Philly actually and it was really cool, I'm hoping I can see him again...maybe get my costume signed,' she said.
Even kids were wearing Star Trek uniforms! Even if they love Trek for some strange reasons.
"How cheesy it is! I mean seriously! Have you seen the Wrath of Khan? It's so cheesy," one kid said.
Austin man William Christopher Meinsen has had a Star Trek movie uniform for 30 years.
He signed up to have a photo taken with Shatner.
"I'm not nervous at all. I'm just kind of wondering what he'll think when he sees you know...me in this uniform. He'll probably look at me and say 'How old are you again?'" said Meinsen.
Thanks to the folks at Wizard World, we got an exclusive "green room" interview with Shatner before the mayor's dedication.
"I love Austin, I've been here over the years many times. Great city, great college town and I'm very happy to be here at the Comic Con that's taking place right now," Shatner said.
As a Trekkie...I had to ask him if he's going to lobby to be in the next Star Trek film.
"I'm gonna be the villain...I'll have inserts into my pec muscles...and hope for the best," Shatner joked.
Comic Con continues through Sunday.
Shatner will be here through Saturday.
